Have you ever played an opponent who sent every return back to you with some crazy spin? Those spinning returns can really mess with your 3rd shot drop. So how do you know if your opponent is sending you a ball with a lot of spin?
In this quick tip Matt shows us how to read an opponent’s return shot to know if it will have heavy spin or not. This is an important skill to have because a spinny return is more difficult to drop than a normal hit. Being able to read your opponents movements will give you the time to adjust your play and set yourself up to safely approach the net.

I would like to see a video on the “parallax view.” Many players don’t know about this “sight” problem. Thanks.
Should have included how to counteract the spin.
Ditto Steve. A tip doesn’t do any good if it doesn’t tell us how to deal with an opponents it. Through experience I know how to handle spins but many of your viewers won’t. How will a slice bounce–lower, higher, slower, faster, sideways? How about a toppsin? If any of these things are true, should I get closer to the return or do I need to give it more room? Also, will my shot come off lower or higher or sideways when returning a slice or topspin and how do I need to compensate?
What is the correct method for returning a spin? And, what shot should the return ball be? Drop, Drive, or just get it back and hope?
Shhh! The spin is my go to shot. Only my doubles partner is allowed to know how to return it!
